Connecting for Good
Trellis' mission is to help connect neighborhood based organization to work together towards the strengthening of their community. These connections help break down divisions of class and ethnicity as groups work together towards a common goal of social good. Through these service opportunities, individuals can better see, hear and understand each other.
Recently, we connected students from Brooklyn School for Collaborative Studies to a local community garden for a service project.
Above are pictures of some of the students getting their hands dirty and learning more about what goes into maintaining a community garden
Below is the testimony of one of organizers from the garden on his experience with the students
“Thanks so much for including the Wyckoff Bond Community Garden in your field day activities. I was very impressed with their observations while walking down the path and their attentiveness when hearing explanations of what they saw. The questions they asked during the “Press Conference” were spot on and opened up areas of discussion about how community gardens are run. While I hadn’t planned an activity ahead of time, the kids who turned the compost bin were responsible with using the pitchfork and learned something about composting in a short time. While some of the kids were shy, some restless, I was extremely impressed with how they treated each other with respect as well as humor. I hope this is just the beginning of a mutually beneficial relationship between BCS and WBG.”
